Inclusion Festival proves huge success at Principality Stadium
The 2019 Road to Principality initiative saw more than 100 teams and more than 1000 players from all over Wales take part in a week-long series of community festivals, schools and club finals and one-off matches. One whole day was dedicated to inclusion – growing opportunities for everyone to be involved with the game through alternative formats and engaging new participants.
There was a Walking Rugby Festival, a Mixed Ability Festival, the first IGR match to be played at Principality Stadium, and an opportunity for two primary schools based in the shadow of the stadium to benefit from an experience at the home of Welsh rugby following a six week engagement programme run by WRU apprentices.
Six mixed ability teams are now running at venues in every rugby region. All six took part in a mixed ability festival as part of the Road to Principality series of community events and matches. Watch as Cardiff Chiefs, Colwyn Bay Stingrays, Dragons All Stars, Llanelli Warriors, Newtown Dragons and Swansea Gladiators play on the hallowed turf of Principality Stadium.
The Cardiff Lions and Swansea Vikings played the first IGR (International Gay Rugby) match at Principality Stadium. Rugby was the winner.
Pupils from primary schools in the shadow of Principality Stadium enjoyed taking part in rugby sessions delivered by WRU apprentices, capped with a fun festival at the stadium itself as part of the Road to Principality series.
